In addition to the honour of being
named Host Mountain Resort for the 2010
Games, Whistler continues to win awards
and break records.
Not satisfied with consistently being
ranked the number 1 ski resort in North
America, Whistler Mountain broke world
records last season with the opening of the
Peak 2 Peak Gondola. Boasting the longest
unsupported lift span in the world at 3.024
kilometres (1.88 miles), it’s also the highest
lift of its kind at 415 metres (1,361 feet).
And where once Whistler was
synonymous with winter, the resort has
seen a return of its summer popularity,
with visitors rediscovering teeming lakes,
pristine natural surroundings and adventure
activities galore. Whistler has truly become
a year-round destination.
So while its past and present has been
filled with Olympic dreams and awardwinning
success, the almost unbelievable
reality of Whistler’s future … is that the best
is still yet to come.
◆ 1978 Construction begins on a new town centre that will eventually become Whistler Village.
◆ ��1980 Blackcomb Mountain is officially opened.
◆ ��1998 Whistler and Blackcomb mountains merge under the Intrawest Corporation.
